Peter Acworth is a web entrepreneur located in San Francisco who works in the technology industry. In addition, he is the creator and CEO of Kink.com, which is an online pornography company that specialises in BDSM and fetish-related content. The San Francisco Bay Guardian reports that Acworth’s work is driven by “Kink’s ideas of intimacy, conversational playfulness, and mutual enjoyment exchanges,” and that he has stated the view that “a product line should originate from an individual’s real dreams.” During his time as a doctoral student in finance at Columbia University, Acworth became involved in the pornography business.
Acworth was inspired to establish his own pornographic website after reading an article in a British newspaper about a firefighter who earned £250,000 in a short amount of time by creating an online pornography site. BDSM porn was the primary focus of Acworth’s site because of his lifetime interest in bondage, which he characterised as “a lifelong passion.” Hogtied was a bondage pornographic website that offered material licenced from other bondage pornography producers. Acworth dropped out of graduate school to work on the site full-time after a few months. Acworth relocated from New York City to San Francisco in 1998, where he remains now.
Acworth saw that sales were plateauing as a result of other sites utilising the same material, so he started creating his own content, first showing himself with different women that he met on Craigslist or via his photographer friends. Acworth launched his second website, Fucking Machines, in 2000 under the umbrella of Cybernet Entertainment, Inc., the same corporate organisation that operated Hogtied.com. Following that, Acworth launched a number of other websites, and in 2006 the company changed its name to Kink.com from Cybernet. Acworth announced the acquisition of The San Francisco Armory in late 2006, and the deal closed in early 2007. He made the announcement about Kink.
