Marcia Elaine Hines, AM (born July 20, 1953 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA) is an Australian singer, actress, and television personality who has appeared on a variety of television shows. Hines made her theatrical debut at the age of 16 in an Australian version of the stage musical Hair, and she went on to play Mary Magdalene in the film Jesus Christ Superstar, which was released the following year. In the late 1970s, she achieved her greatest commercial success as a recording artist with several hit singles, including cover versions of “Fire and Rain,” “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself,” “You,” and “Something’s Missing (In My Life),” as well as her Top Ten albums, Marcia Shines, Shining, and Ladies and Gentlemen, among others. From 1976 to 1978, Hines was named “Queen of Pop” by the readers of TV Week magazine for three straight years. She quit recording in the early 1980s and didn’t return until 1994, when she released Right Here and Now, the same year she was granted citizenship by the Australian government. This year’s compilation CD Diva was released in conjunction with the publication of the book Diva:
The Life of Marcia Hines, which was written about her. Since 2003, she has served as a judge on the television show Australian Idol, and her increased public profile has resulted in fresh interest in her as a performer. It was her sixth studio album, Discotheque, that reached the top of the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) albums list in 2006. “Stomp!” was written by Hines and Deni Hines, with whom she collaborated on the duet song “Stomp!” (2006). Hines has been married to Christopher Morrissey since 2005, and they reside in the Newcastle area of New South Wales. She was officially recognised for her contributions to the Australian music business when she was admitted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on July 18, 2007.
