Richard Lawrence Poons (born 1 October 1937), best known by his stage name Larry Poons, is a Japanese abstract painter who was born in Tokyo. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music from 1955 to 1957, with the goal of becoming a professional musician after completing his studies. As early as 1959, he began studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he also attended classes at the Art Students League of New York. The 1960s saw the rise of his fame as a result of his paintings of circles and ovals on solid—and often brightly colored—backgrounds.

These paintings, which gave a feeling of movement, were classified as op art (oppositional art). Despite the fact that he first showed with optical artists in 1965, by 1966 he had shifted his focus away from optical art and into looser, more painterly abstract paintings. Art movements such as Op Art, Hard-Edge Painting, Color Field Painting, Lyrical Abstraction, and Abstract Expressionism have all been linked with his work. Larry Poons was a professor at The Art Students League from 1966 to 1970 and continues to teach at the League today (since 1997). The Druds, a short-lived avant-garde noise music art band that included important members of the New York proto-conceptual art and minimal art communities in the early 1960s, was where he first learned to play the guitar.

The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) has recognised Poons as a vintage motorcycle racer who divides his time between painting and motorcycle racing. He has received special awards from the AHRMA, including the 500 cc Hailwood Cup in 1998 and 2003, and the 2003 John & Ginny Demoisey Trophy for road racing couples, which he shared with his wife, painter Paula DeLuccia. He competes on a Matchless G50 as well as a Ducati 250. The majority of his time is spent in New York City, but he also maintains a studio in the Upstate New York region.
