Murray Walker is a semi-retired Formula One racing pundit and journalist Graeme Murray Walker, Template:Post-nominals (born 10 October 1923). Walker worked with the BBC for the most of his career, but when the BBC lost the Formula One coverage contract to ITV, he continued to commentate. He has a unique, animated style of commenting. Since 1978, various broadcasters all around the globe, notably Australia and Japan, have utilised British television commentary of Formula One seasons. He was a victim of the commentator’s curse, claiming in an interview that he would say how well a driver was racing or that they would most likely win the race, only for them to retire or crash out shortly after, hence his catchphrase “…Unless I’m very much mistaken…”, which would be followed by “…And I am very much mistaken…”. He’s renowned for his gentlemanly and courteous demeanour, seeing the best in even the most controversial drivers.
He seldom chastised drivers, preferring to give them the benefit of the doubt when it came to assigning responsibility for mishaps. Following the controversial crash between Michael Schumacher and Walker’s close friend Damon Hill that decided the World Drivers’ Championship in Schumacher’s favour during the 1994 Australian Grand Prix, Walker, unlike his fellow commentators at the time, most notably former 500cc Motorcycle World Champion Barry Sheene, refused to blame Schumacher outright.
