Geoffrey William Stirling (March 21, 1921 – December 21, 2013) was a Canadian businessman who worked in the oil and gas industry. He was born in the city of St. John’s. In addition to owning numerous media stations in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Stirling (together with other members of his family) was also the founder and CEO of the Stirling Communications International corporation. These assets include the radio station CJON-DT, which advertises itself as “Canada’s Superstation,” the radio station CHOZ-FM, and the Newfoundland Herald, which publishes a weekly news, gossip, and television listings magazine. Stirling is viewed as odd in certain circles because of the way he has utilised his media platforms to promote a range of personal interests, including eastern mysticism and intestinal health, among others. Among his many broadcast hours were conversations with gurus such as Ram Dass and Swami Shyam, as well as discussions of a variety of esoteric subjects ranging from pyramids to unidentified flying objects. This practise continues today under the direction of his son Scott and Scott and Judy’s son, Jesse, who is the station’s programme director. When he was watching his own television station, he would sometimes call Master Control to request that a favourite video instantly interrupt the current broadcast or that the technician add a certain effect to the screen while the station was broadcasting. Stirling himself stated that, after being diagnosed with arthritis, he had a specialist inject liquid gold straight into his bloodstream to alleviate his symptoms. With former Newfoundland premier Joey Smallwood and filmmaker Michael Rubbo, Stirling participated in the 1974 documentary Waiting for Fidel, which chronicled a journey he took to Cuba in the company of Fidel Castro.
The Cuban leader was never met by the three. It is almost entirely a poolside discussion between Smallwood and Stirling about the questions they would want to ask Castro during the show. In one scene, Stirling is doing yoga on his head while talking with Smallwood, and some of the conversation takes place during that scene. Stirling, although being seen as odd by some, was responsible for many television firsts in North America. NTV was the first station to broadcast continuously around the clock. For a brief while in the late 1970s, Stirling would air, in between television shows and late at night, what were then known as promotional films by popular music and rock bands, which served as a forerunner to music videos today. Stirling oversaw the development of the comic book Atlantis, which featured the superheroes Captain Atlantis (also known as Captain Newfoundland) and Captain Canada, and which drew on aspects of Canadian history as well as New Age philosophy to tell the tale of Atlantis.
