Known professionally as Daniel Sexton Gurney (born April 13, 1931), he was an American racing driver, race car function Object() { [native code] }, and team owner who retired in 2007. He was born in Port Jefferson, New York, the son of a Metropolitan Opera singer, but he relocated to California when he was a young adolescent. Since 1958, he has competed at the highest levels of motorsport as a driver, a vehicle builder, and a team owner. Gurney also competed in and won races in the Indy Car, NASCAR, Can-Am, and Trans-Am series, among other series. A pioneering driver, Gurney was the first to win races in four different categories: sports cars in 1958,
Formula One in 1962, NASCAR in 1963, and Indy Car in 1967. (the other two being Mario Andretti and Juan Pablo Montoya). In 1967, after winning the 24 hours of Le Mans alongside A.J. Foyt, he suddenly splashed champagne over the podium while he and Foyt were celebrating their victory on the podium. Along with establishing this tradition, he was also the first to add a simple right-angle extension to the top trailing edge of the rear wing, which was later copied by others. It is known as a Gurney flap, and it is used to enhance downforce while also imposing just a modest increase in aerodynamic drag provided the device is properly constructed. At the 1968 German Grand Prix, he made history by becoming the first driver to ever compete in Grand Prix racing while wearing a full-face helmet.
