Billy Eugene Owens (born May 1, 1969) is a former professional basketball player who hails from the United States.
Owens scored 34 points per game as a high school senior, and he helped Carlisle High School (Pennsylvania) win four straight state championships during that time. He was regarded as the second-best prep player in 1988, behind only Alonzo Mourning in this regard. Owens and Mourning were named co-MVPs for their performances in the McDonald’s Game. Owens was often compared to Magic Johnson during his career, mostly because of his exceptional flexibility, ball handling, and passing abilities for his height. He represented the United States in the 1990 FIBA World Championship, when he helped the team to a bronze medal. He was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the 1991 NBA Draft as a 6’8″ small forward/shooting guard out of Syracuse University, where he played college basketball. Owens, on the other hand, was dealt to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Mitch Richmond, a high-scoring guard who had been a holdout since the start of the regular season. In exchange for Owens’ height advantage over Richmond, coach and general manager Don Nelson felt he would be able to complete the squad. The popular “Run TMC” three of Mitch Richmond, Tim Hardaway, and Chris Mullin were parted ways in the deal. Nelson said that he “was under pressure to make [the squad] larger” in order to transform the Warriors from a decent team to a great one, according to Nelson. Over the course of his career with the Warriors, Owens averaged over 15 points and almost eight rebounds per game, earning him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1992. However, he failed to make the kind of impact that was anticipated of him and ended up playing just three seasons with the Golden State Warriors.
Owens played 10 seasons in the NBA, with the Warriors, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, Seattle SuperSonics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Detroit Pistons, until a series of injuries eventually took its toll and he was forced to retire. Furthermore, he fell out of favour with many basketball experts, who believed that his lack of motivation and dedication to developing his game caused him to be omitted off the list of the game’s up and coming players of his generation.
