How long do turtles live for

Larger species such as sea turtles are estimated to live about 80 years. The giant tortoise, the largest of all land turtles, typically lives at least a century. Some have even been known to live for more than 200 years!

Longest-Lived Reptile: The Giant Tortoise (300 Years)

And these turtles have lifespans that perfectly match their 500- to 1,000-pound weights: giant tortoises in captivity have been known to live longer than 200 years, and there’s every reason to believe that testudines in the wild regularly hit the 300-year mark.

According to the Turtle Conservation Society, most turtle species live from 10 to 80 years. But sea turtles and large land tortoises can live to be much older. Their lifespan can be 150 years or more. … Some have estimated, however, that large turtles may be able to live 400 to 500 years!

The lifespan of a turtle varies greatly depending on the species of turtle. For example, a typical pet turtle can live between 10 and 80 years or so while larger species can easily live over 100 years.

A: Yes a turtle’s shell does have feeling! If you scratch a turtle, he will feel it just as if you were scratching his skin. He can also feel pain through his shell. We’ve sadly seen many cases where humans have drilled holes in turtles’ shells.

Which Tortoises Have the Longest Lifespan and Which Have the Shortest? At the other end of the spectrum, the curiously low profiled ‘Pankcake Tortoise‘ is a species with one of the shortest lifespans; usually no more than 30 years.

Most turtles are omnivores, which means they eat both meat and plants. Box turtles can eat a wide variety of foods, such as slugs, worms, crickets, apples, tomatoes, cantaloupe and leafy green vegetables. Dandelion leaves are also a good choice for a pet turtle’s diet because they are high in vitamin A and calcium.

Turtles cry a lot

…but not because they’re upset. Instead, turtles have glands that help them remove excess salt from their eyes.

Yes, it can! Tortoises and turtles show affection in different ways than a human or dog would. Yet, both turtles and tortoises are definitely able to show affection or at least a preference when it comes to their human friends.

Turtles are not stupid, however, their intelligence is subjective and hard to quantify, but they know how to get the essentials. It has yet to be proven if turtles have the ear structure and cognitive ability to recognize their name. however, they are trainable, so it seems food is the way to motivate them.

This is essential to their survival in the wild. While turtles do not have vocal cords, they have adapted to use nonvocal communication to express a wide array of information. They can even produce hissing sounds and other low-frequency sounds.

It’s illegal to sell or distribute pet turtles with shells less than 4 inches long because they spread salmonella. Forty years ago, the U.S. outlawed the sale of small turtles as pets because they harbor salmonella, a bacterium that causes a highly unpleasant and occasionally deadly illness in humans.

Yes! However, unlike humans, they do not cry to express their emotions. Turtles cry because they need to remove the excess salt in their body.

To avoid poisoning themselves with salt buildup, sea turtles have a gland in each eye that actively pumps salt ions into their tears. They need to run these glands continuously to maintain the correct balance of salt in their bodies.

Tortoises and turtles do fart! Farts can range in size and sound just like humans. They will probably not be as loud but they can be just as pungent. The tortoises’ diet contributes to their farts as well as the amount of gas build-up they experience during the day.

Respiratory Infections

One of the most dangerous illnesses a turtle can catch is a respiratory infection (basically, a cold). … The turtle is straining to breathe or making wheezing or whistling noises. Bubbles come out of the turtle’s nose when he or she is not in the water.

Although sea turtles are physically adapted to a saline environment, they need to be able to excrete excess salt. As reptilian kidneys are unable to excrete large volumes of salt via urine, sea turtles evolved specialised secretory glands (lachrymal glands) located in the corner of each eye to remove excess salt.

They have special glands behind each eye, called “salt glands” that they use to get rid of all the salt from the seawater. … In this way they can drink seawater, get rid of the salt in their tears and have about half the amount of seawater left as freshwater to use for their physical requirements.

“Normally, female turtles do not lay their eggs in the water. But if disturbed when on the beach and distracted multiple nights from returning to the nest, they will dump their clutch in the ocean,” Paladino said. Humans can also cause problems for hatchlings as they leave the nest and head toward the ocean.

“The turtles have enough tears to feed the butterflies simply because the butterflies are taking so little,” he said. “They simply uptake salts through a process similar to absorption by placing the proboscis on the salt-laden (tears) and passively ‘feed. ‘”

Sea animals and sea salt

Animals that live in the sea cope with seawater in different ways, depending on how much salt their bodies can withstand. … They don’t necessarily drink seawater the way we do, but they can suck water and salt through their skin via processes called osmosis and diffusion.

Human kidneys can only make urine that is less salty than salt water. Therefore, to get rid of all the excess salt taken in by drinking seawater, you have to urinate more water than you drank. Eventually, you die of dehydration even as you become thirstier.

Butterflies and Turtle Tears

They don’t appear to harm the turtles in any way because they are so gentle, although they do make it difficult for the turtles to see.
