How long can you drive with a p0128 code

Can I drive my vehicle with a P0128 trouble code and illuminated CEL? You may drive your vehicle with a P0128 trouble code. You will not notice any issue except for maybe the temperature gauge never reaching normal levels, and possibly the Check Engine light being illuminated.

How serious is the P0128 code? P0128 is not a very serious code. However, if not repaired and the vehicle is used over a long period of time, there is a small chance that water contamination of the oil could cause deterioration and engine damage.

It is possible to drive a vehicle with a faulty coolant temperature sensor as the management system defaults to a static reading. A vehicle’s coolant sensor is a critical component used by the engine management system. It directly affects, cooling and fueling of the engine and therefore affects how the engine performs.

Low engine coolant can alter the engine running temperature enough to signal trouble code P0128. Your intake air temperature sensor, coolant temperature sensor and coolant fan could also signal this trouble code, so these should be inspected after you look over your thermostat and coolant level.

The most common cause for P0128 is the engine coolant thermostat is stuck open. … When the thermostat does open, the hot coolant should start to flow and quickly warm up the radiator hose. If the radiator hose heats up slowly, the thermostat is stuck open or opening prematurely and needs to be replaced.

If you run your engine cold all the time, you’ll most likely experience increased fuel consumption across the board. Additionally, you’ll find higher amounts of carbon buildup at various parts of the engine. The most damaging effect of feeding a fuel-rich mixture to the engine is excess fuel reaching the exhaust.

Symptoms of a bad thermostat

Thermostat stuck open: When the thermostat is stuck open, the engine temperature drops below normal when driving, especially on the highway in cold weather. A stuck-open thermostat can also cause lack of heat from the heating system. The Check Engine light may come on too.

the most noticeable issues occur when the thermostat gets stuck in either the open or closed position. a malfunction can result in a trouble code, generated by the engine’s computer, which can turn on your check engine light.

In most cars, the temperature needle will be at or near the center when the engine is at normal operating temperature, which usually takes at least a minute or two to reach after starting a cold engine.

The engine runs cold

If the engine gets hotter than the optimum temperature, you know it won’t be able to sustain the heat for more than 10 minutes and will eventually die. However, when your engine runs below the optimum temperature, your engine will die slowly yet certainly — it’s a death by a thousand cuts.

As temperature of an engine exceeds 230 degrees Fahrenheit, the engine is overheated. Above 245 degrees Fahrenheit, damage may occur. As heat continues to increase, the different rates of thermal expansion cause metal to distort.

Normal operating temperature of new and used vehicles

Of course, factors such as air conditioning, towing and idling at a stop will impact this, but you should be fine if your car is running at anywhere between 190-220 degrees. Over this limit, and your radiator and coolant fluids run a higher risk of burning.

Traditionally, turbochargers are cooled by the engine oil that is fed to the turbo bearings. Let the engine idle for a minute or two so that turbos can be cooled by flowing oil. It’s also a good habit to drive last few kilometres to your destination sedately.
