How do giraffes sleep

Giraffes – Four to Five Hours per Day

As grazers, giraffes spend most of their day eating. Much of their sleep takes place in short naps lasting 35 minutes or less. They can sleep lying down or standing up.

A frequent question asked of keepers is do giraffes lie down to sleep? And the answer is … yes, our three Rothschild giraffes do sleep lying down! But it is rare for giraffes in the wild to snooze on the ground, due to predatory dangers, as they need to be on their feet to ensure a speedy getaway.

Captive koalas have been caught sleeping up to 22 hours a day, leaving just 2 hours for activity — and they say sloths are lazy. In the wild, koalas sleep closer to 14 hours a day, but also fit in five hours of relaxation. All this rest is necessary due to the koala’s diet of eucalyptus leaves.

Bullfrogs… No rest for the Bullfrog. The bullfrog was chosen as an animal that doesn’t sleep because when tested for responsiveness by being shocked, it had the same reaction whether awake or resting. However, there were some problems with how the bullfrogs were tested.

Giraffe often rest while standing up, but new research shows that they lie down more often than previously thought. When lying down, they fold their legs under their body, but mostly keeping their necks held high. Giraffe have been known to continue browsing and ruminating in this resting position.

The average giraffe sleeps for 4.6 hours per day⁵. For the most part, giraffes tend to sleep during the night, although they do get in some quick naps throughout the day. Giraffes can sleep standing up as well as lying down, and their sleep cycles are quite short, lasting 35 minutes or shorter.
