Nimona got her powers from a witch spell in the comic book. She is a teenager with the powers to shapeshift into pretty much anything.

Nimona is an adaption of the 2015 graphic novel created by ND Stevenson.

It follows the story of a genderfluid teenager who joins Ballister Boldheart to find the murderer of Queen Valerin.

According to Stevenson, he has always been drawn to shapeshifters. He even relates to the concept of having one person not being the entirely same.

While studying at Maryland Institute College of Art, he learned about the Cartoon Network series’ popularity, which includes ‘LGBTQ’ narratives.

As a result, he set a goal to work on Adventure Time and published Nimona online in 2012 on Tumblr. In 2015, HarperCollins released it as a graphic novel.

Shortly, it was acquired by 20th Century Fox’s animation division. After it was canceled for years, Annpuran Pictures and Netflix collaborated and finally released its movie adaption on June 23, 2023.

It has directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. The voice actors are Chloe Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, and Frances Conroy.

How Did Nimona Get Her Powers?

Nimona got her powers by a spell given to her by a witch in the comic book. Nimona has the ability to shapeshift and is seemingly immortal.

In the comics, she comes across an old witch in a well. To help the witch, she asks her to turn her into a dragon to fight the raiders that attacked her village.

The witch turns her into a dragon, and she returns to her village and defeats the raiders.

When she tries to turn back into a girl, she finds out about her ability to shapeshift.

As a result, the witch magic turned her into a shapeshifter.

In the Netflix movie’s flashback, Nimona is a sick child who suddenly gets better. For the first time, she used her powers to protect her parents from raiders.

When her parents learned about her ability, they rejected her, believing she got replaced by a changeling.

Is Nimona Genderfluid?

Yes, Nimona is genderfluid. She is a fully-formed and complex character who does not specify her sexuality.

Even the reviewer presented her as a depiction of identity. Her originality has been marked through linguistic and fashion choices.

Webcomic creator ND Stevenson developed the book on his own experience. However, he came up with the idea before taking pieces together about his identity.

He has come out as a non-binary and transmasculine. Nomani Nd Stevenson pronouns are he/him, but not entirely a man.

The writer said the heart of the story is he found himself constraining growing up, as he is from a conservative and religious family.

The writer told The Hollywood Reporter, he created the character filled with anger, pain, weirdness, and chubbiness.

While he developed her character, he was accomplishing it for his purgation. As a result, she is his alter-ego and avatar.

The creator added we should know who we are, what we think, what we want to be, and what we say.

Stevenson believed Nimona controlled how the world saw her, and she knew who she was.

So, by creating Nimona and publishing it online over the decade, he has shared his journey.
