Luyendyk Jr. made a commitment to compete full-time in the early seasons of the Indy Racing League’s Indy Pro Series, currently known as the Firestone Indy Lights. He focused his attention on this competitive arena beginning in 2002.
Luyendyk Jr. reached remarkable milestones throughout his Firestone Indy Lights career, including one victory, four pole positions, and an astounding score of 24 top-five finishes.
His consistent performances won him a second-place finish in the Firestone Indy Lights Championship in 2002, a third-place finish in 2004, and a fourth-place finish in 2008.
His qualifying for the 2006 Indianapolis 500 event in a car owned by his father, with assistance from cheapcaribbean.com and Blue Star Jets, represented a watershed moment in his racing career.
Despite the team’s limited practice time due to a secondary week engine program, Luyendyk Jr. raced in more powerful cars for the first time. However, unforeseen handling troubles forced him to abandon the race early. He completed 54 laps out of a total of 200, finishing in 28th place out of a field of 33 drivers.
Luyendyk Jr. expanded his racing career into the Traxxas TORC Series, working with Aero Motorsports and receiving sponsorship from Ethika and Cooper Tires.
His TORC series debut in the Pro Light class at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway resulted in an excellent fourth-place finish. In addition, on November 18, 2013, he participated in a testing session with Dale Coyne Racing.
