Harrison Smith Vikings

Coming out of college, Smith was a favorite to be selected in the first round NFL draft of 2012. He was one of the hottest properties coming out of college into the 2012 NFL Draft being ranked second behind Mark Barron. It was all looking good for him at the time with several sports websites having him top their various ratings and it became almost a certainty that he would be picked in the first round of the draft.

Smith had a lot of factors going on for him in the 2012 NFL Combine, with his strengths being his size, consistency, athletic ability, play recognition, and tackling. His only undoing was his record from his man to man coverage ability. In the end, Smith signed a four-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings worth $7.13 million (a sign-on bonus of $3.63 million and a guaranteed payment of $5.78 million). He signed as a safety after he was drafted as the 29th overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the team.

Down the pecking order of starting free safeties in the Viking’s set-up, Smith was the third with the first two being Andrew Sendejo and Jamarca Sanford. He finished his first professional season with one sack, two touchdowns, three interceptions, and 104 combined tackles, however, as he found little game time. The next season worked out better for Harrison Smith as he was the first choice of free safety. Unfortunately, as the season progressed, he suffered an injury to his foot which made him start only seven games all season.

For the 2016 football season, the Vikings activated his one extra year option in 2015, in his initial contract to offer Harrison a one year deal worth $5.28 million. That same season, he played in his first Pro Bowl game, replacing Earl Thomas who was injured in the lineup. Later, Smith would go on to sign a contract extension with the Vikings for a 5-year period which was worth $51.25 million. The terms included a $10 million signing bonus and a guaranteed $28.57 million.

As announced on December 20, 2016, Harrison Smith was voted to a consecutive Pro Bowl appearance when he was selected for the 2017 NFL Pro Bowl. This selection marked the first time and his second in total that he was selected as a Pro Bowl first-team member. At Vikings, Smith wears jersey number 22.
