His Early Life
Hannibal was raised in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. He was named after Carthaginian general Hannibal.
In his stand-up routine, he has related tales of his childhood and how growing up in Chicago was a life-changing experience.
He also said during his teenage, women used to reject him because of the relationship his name has with the fictitious cannibal Hannibal Lecter.
During his early days, he attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale for four years after finishing Steinmetz College Prep, but he never received a degree.
He made friends with hip-hop artist Open Mike Eagle and the two are still good friends and can be seen together.
Buress slowly became well known through his stand-up performances, Comedy Central specials, and guest spots on The Eric Andre Show and Broad City.
In 2002, Buress started performing stand-up at an open mic. My Name Is Hannibal, his debut comedy album, was released on July 27, 2010.
In 2012, he released Animal Furnace, his second album, which was also made into a Comedy Central special.

While performing at the Lopez Night, he did the first sketch about his girlfriend. Since then, he has been performing the same jokes with some tweaking.
The girlfriend jokes are more refreshing than his same Bill Cosby routine, which he performed for the first time in a Philadelphia club.
Once, he also joked about his former partner as he said, “I’m in awful shape. I’m trying to get in better shape. My girlfriend she’s in good shape. She gives me health tips sometimes, like, ‘Hannibal, you’re going to suffer.’ Stuff like that.”
He also said in an interview that whatever he said on the show was never meant to be mean to someone except his former girlfriend.
Moreover, he said that after becoming famous, he tried to contact her but couldn’t find her on the internet to tell her how he is doing.
