Gynecologists in Kenya – Cancer prevention and screening

Gynecologic cancers are the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells originating in the female reproductive organs, including the cervix, ovaries, uterus, Fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva. They begin in different places within a woman’s pelvis, which is the area below the stomach and in between the hip bones.

There are many factors that cause gynecologic cancers. Some classes of genes, called oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, promote the growth of cancer. The abnormal function of these genes can be acquired through smoking, aging, environmental influences or inherited. Gynecologic cancers include;

  Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is cancer of the ovaries, which are organs within a woman’s reproductive system. Ovarian cancers may also start in the cells in the far (distal) end of the fallopian tubes. Ovarian cancer can be difficult to detect early because patients might have no symptoms or mild symptoms that are mistaken for other issues until the disease has progressed. It’s easy to overlook the early symptoms of ovarian cancer because they’re similar to other common illnesses or they tend to come and go.

The signs and symptoms include:

♦ Abdominal bloating or swelling
♦ Weight loss
♦ Discomfort in the pelvic area
♦ Changes in bowel habits, such as the frequent need to urinate
♦ Fatigue
♦ Heartburn, indigestion, and constipation

♦ Back pain
♦ Menstrual irregularities
♦ Painful intercourse
♦ Dermatomyositis (a rare inflammatory disease that can cause skin rash, muscle weakness, and inflamed muscles)

Uterine Cancer

Uterine cancer also is known as endometrial cancer, is the most common cancer of the female reproductive system. The uterus also called the womb, is where the baby grows when a woman is pregnant. The most common type of uterine cancer is also called endometrial cancer because it forms in the lining of your uterus, called the endometrium.

There two main types of uterine cancer include.

♦ Endometrial carcinoma, which starts from cells in the lining of the uterus- the endometrium.

♦ Uterine sarcoma which develops in the supporting tissues of the uterus, including muscle, fat, bone and fibrous tissue (material that forms ligaments and tendons). The third type of cancer called carcinosarcoma sometimes develops in the uterus. It has features of both carcinomas and sarcomas.

The signs and symptoms include:

♦ Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom. It can be foul-smelling, pus-like or blood-tinged
♦ Vaginal discharge.
♦ Pelvic pains or pressure
♦ Pain with urination and/or sex.

Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix, the organ that connects the vagina to the uterus. The cervix has two main types of cells: squamous and glandular cells. Abnormal changes in either of these two types of cells can result in cervical cancer. Almost all cervical cancers are caused by a persistent infection with a virus called Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

The signs and symptoms include:

♦ Vaginal discharge, pink, watery discharge (often containing blood)
♦ Abnormal vaginal bleeding such as bleeding following sexual intercourse, after menopause, or between periods, or having longer and heavier periods
♦ Vaginal odor
♦ Vaginal pain – You may have pain during sex or pain in the pelvic area, not from sex or other activities
