Gordon McQueen, a former Scotland, Manchester United, and Leeds United central defender, died at the age of 70 following a difficult battle with dementia, according to his family.
Bryan Robson, a former Manchester United and England player who worked as a coach with McQueen when he was manager of Middlesbrough, was among the first to offer appreciation. Because of his skill, fearlessness, and captivating attitude, Robson hailed McQueen as a great fit for Manchester United.
He highlighted that McQueen was a wonderful person with a kind heart who could brighten up any place he entered, not just a talented footballer.
McQueen, who was born in north Ayrshire, began his football career in Scotland with St Mirren before becoming a major member of the legendary Leeds club of the mid-1970s. He was instrumental in Leeds winning the English championship in 1973-74.
He was, however, suspended for the 1975 European Cup final, which he lost to Bayern Munich. McQueen joined archrivals Manchester United in 1978. Flags outside Old Trafford were flown at half-mast on Thursday as a show of respect.
McQueen was an imposing presence with his unique blond hair and towering height of 6ft 3in, establishing himself as one of the greatest center-backs of his time. He played 30 times for Scotland, missing the 1978 World Cup.
