Giselle Khoury, a prominent Lebanese-French journalist and talk show host, captivated audiences with her insightful interviews and engaging conversations on her show, “Al Mashhad.” But beyond her illustrious career, Khoury’s personal life was a vital part of her identity. She was married to Samir Kassir, a journalist and historian, and their love story is an integral part of her legacy.
Giselle Azzi, born in Achrafieh, Beirut, with her roots in Okaibe, Keserwan District, was a remarkable woman who made a name for herself in the world of journalism. She pursued an education in History at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik and went on to specialize in Media at the Lebanese University.
Her journey into the world of media began in late 1985 when she joined LBC as a presenter of cultural talk shows. This marked the inception of her career, and little did she know then that she would go on to become a prominent figure in the media landscape.
In 2002, Khoury embarked on a new adventure by joining the pan-Arab media group MBC. Her contributions were instrumental in the launch of the 24-hour Al-Arabiya news channel. During her tenure at Al-Arabiya from 2003 to 2013, she hosted a weekly political talk show. This program featured influential political decision-makers, heads of state, prime ministers, and ministers of foreign affairs.
Giselle Khoury’s program on Al-Arabiya delved into current events and explored the latest political developments from the Arab world and beyond. In 2009, she ventured into the realm of production by co-founding Al Rawi, a company that embarked on its first project—a four-episode biography of the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.
Her career reached new heights when she was hired by BBC Arabic in 2013. Here, she presented “Al Mash’had” (English: “The Scene”), a program that unveiled eyewitness accounts of recent history in the Middle East. Khoury traveled across different countries, engaging in conversations with prominent Arab and international figures to shed light on events that had left an indelible mark on history.
In 2020, Giselle Khoury embraced a fresh opportunity at Sky News Arabia, where she presented “With Giselle.” This show represented a significant turning point in the world of talk shows, characterized by its innovative format, rhythm, and a wide array of topics.
The personal life of Giselle Khoury was also an essential part of her identity. At the age of 20, she embarked on a journey of love and commitment by marrying Dr. Elie Khoury. The couple was blessed with a son and a daughter. Importantly, Giselle retained Elie’s surname after their marriage.
However, her life took another turn when she entered into a marriage that would profoundly impact her journey. Giselle Khoury married journalist, writer, and historian Samir Kassir. Their union was a beautiful fusion of shared passions and values, not only as a couple but also as individuals dedicated to journalism, media, and free expression.
Tragically, their journey as partners was cut short when Samir Kassir was assassinated on June 2, 2005. This loss was not only deeply personal but also a blow to the world of journalism.
In the wake of her husband’s tragic death, Giselle Khoury channeled her grief into action. She became actively involved in promoting Samir Kassir’s thoughts and principles. This led to the founding of the Samir Kassir Foundation and the SKeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom, both committed to advancing media and cultural freedoms and preserving her late husband’s legacy.
Giselle Khoury’s passing on October 15, 2023, at the age of 62, after a brave and prolonged battle with cancer, leaves a void in the world of journalism and media. Her career and dedication to media freedom continue to inspire future generations. Her achievements were celebrated not only in Lebanon but on an international scale, earning her honors such as the French Order of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
As we reflect on the life and career of Giselle Khoury, we are also reminded of the love and partnership she shared with Samir Kassir. Their story is a testament to the power of love, shared values, and the enduring legacy they leave behind.
