George F. McGinnis (born August 12, 1950) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He was best known for his time with the Indiana Pacers of the American Basketball Association (ABA) (from 1971 to 1975). In 1971, he was drafted into the ABA after graduating from Indiana University. McGinnis became the first sophomore in Big Ten history to lead the conference in both scoring and rebounds during the 1970-71 season at Indiana. In his lone season in Bloomington, he scored 29.9 points per game, earning him All-American and All-Big Ten honours. He transferred to Indiana after that season. After graduating from the American Basketball Association (ABA), George McGinnis joined forces with fellow ABA graduates Julius Erving and Caldwell Jones to form the Philadelphia 76ers, who went on to win the National Basketball Association (NBA) championship in 1977. McGinnis was acquired by the Denver Nuggets in a trade in 1978. When the Pacers traded for high-scoring forward Alex English a year later, they brought him back into the fold.
But McGinnis was a ghost of his former self during his two-year comeback to Indiana, and he made little contribution during his time there as a result. English, on the other hand, went on to become one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the NBA. This trade is now widely regarded as one of the worst (if not the worst) in Indiana Pacers history, as well as one of the most unbalanced transactions in the history of the league. Besides Roger Brown, Reggie Miller, and Mel Daniels, McGinnis is one of just four players in Pacers history to have his jersey number (#30) honoured by the organisation. McGinnis attended Washington High School in Indianapolis, where in 1969 his team went unbeaten for the season and won the state championship. With 148 points in his last four games, McGinnis established a new state tournament scoring mark for the state of Indiana. In addition, he was awarded Mr. Basketball for the state of Indiana in the same season. George McGinnis (ABA 1974-75) and Spencer Haywood (ABA 1969-70) are the only two former ABA and NBA regular season MVPs who did not meet the five-year retirement eligibility criterion to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, out of all former ABA and NBA regular season MVPs.
