Gatura Girls’ High School Active Group.
Location: Gatanga, Thika District, Kenya. Situated on the slopes of the Aberdare Ranges, the school is surrounded by tea plantations and dairy farms.
Aims: To raise awareness of climate change within the local farming community. The ICC club members chose to find out the effect of climate change on the surrounding farming community, whether the farmers were aware of climatic change, and how they were coping with any changes.
The girls interviewed the tea and dairy farmers using a prepared questionnaire that sought answers to the question, ‘What is the effect of climate change on local farming activites?’ On evaluation of the farmers’ responses the ICC students came to the conclusion that climate change has adversely affected tea production, which has slowed over the past few decades.
The farmers had also been forced to abandon the growing of some traditional food crops due to the unfavourable climate. Farmers had been forced to adapt their farming practices by reducing the amount of tea that they planted and look for alternative crops that would work better in the current climate.
The Gatura ICC team has involved the farmers in raising awareness of the climate changes that are occurring and what they (the farmers) can do to adapt. They have also produced a narrative on the effects of climate change, which they are using to educate the local community.
