Gary Arlen Kildall (May 19, 1942 – July 11, 1994) was an American computer scientist and microcomputer entrepreneur who was responsible for the development of the CP/M operating system and the founding of the company Digital Research (DRI). He was one of the first to see microprocessors as fully competent computers rather than just equipment controllers, and he was one of the first to build a business around this idea. Aside from that, he co-hosted the PBS television programme The Computer Chronicles. In spite of a long and distinguished career in computer science that lasted more than two decades, he is most known for his role in IBM’s failed effort to licence CP/M for the IBM PC in 1980.
