Management career
Gareth Southgate was handed his first managerial job by Middlesbrough as soon as he hung up the phone for the side. His appointment caused controversy as he had not obtained the coaching licenses required to manage a Premier League club. However, as he had just retired from the game, he had been allowed to occupy the English Premier League position for as long as he actively worked on securing qualification.
Southgate worked as Middlesbrough manager from June 2006 until October 2009, when he was sacked. In the previous season (2008-09), he led Middlesbrough to a 19th place finish in the Premier League, thus relegating the club to the Championship.
