The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reports that between May and November 2022, 33 road traffic accidents in Borno resulted in the deaths of 61 people.
This information was shared on Thursday in Maiduguri by Corps Sector Commander Utten Iki-Boyi.
According to him, 285 people and 46 vehicles were involved in the accidents, and 151 were injured.
Iki-Boyi reported that 37 people were killed in a horrific car crash on the Maiduguri-Damaturu road in November. He said that the accidents were caused by drivers’ haste, recklessness, and the use of bald tyres.
Therefore, the Sector Commander warned drivers and commercial vehicle drivers to stop using worn-out tyres.
He also cautioned drivers against taking too many drugs or driving while under the influence, saying that drug testing devices would soon be available to check all drivers in the state.
“This Ember month period is a period in which a lot of people are travelling, and a lot of vehicles are now moving on the roads because the rainy season has ended; businesses have also picked up, resulting in a mass movement of people.
“I appeal to motorists, particularly drivers of commercial and other vehicles using the roads, to always take it easy. They should always ensure their vehicles are in good shape before embarking on any journey.
“If you are travelling a long distance, you should embark on the journey in good time so that you will not be overspeeding.
“Most incidents we have been recording are due to human error. If all things are to be done according to the recommendation of the road safety corps, I am certain accident and death cases will be minimised to the barest minimum,” he said.
