“Frankie” Lymon (September 30, 1942 – February 27, 1968) was an American rock and roll singer and songwriter who was best known as the boy soprano lead singer of the New York City-based early rock and roll group, The Teenagers. He was born Franklin Joseph “Frankie” Lymon in New York City on September 30, 1942 and died on February 27, 1968. The group consisted of five guys who were all in their early to mid-teens at the time. The original Teenagers lineup, which was an integrated group, consisted of three African American members, Frankie Lymon, Jimmy Merchant, and Sherman Garnes, as well as two Puerto Rican members, Herman Santiago and Joe Negroni, who were all born in the United States. It was also the Teenagers’ debut song, 1956’s “Why Do Fools Fall in Love,” that became their most successful single. Following Lymon’s departure from the Teenagers in mid-1957, both his and the group’s careers began to deteriorate.
At the age of 25, he was discovered dead in the toilet of his grandmother, the result of a heroin overdose. He was the subject of the 1998 film Why Do Fools Fall in Love, which was based on his life.
