A devastating incident that claimed the life of former Premier League star Anton Walkes has been unveiled by an inquest, shedding light on the tragic events that occurred in Miami earlier this year.
Anton Walkes, a 25-year-old defender who once donned the Tottenham Hotspur jersey, met with a fatal accident in January when a harrowing collision transpired between his jet-ski and a 46ft scarab boat while he was in Miami. The footballer, who was in Florida for a training camp with his club, Charlotte FC, at the time, was aboard the jet-ski when the boat struck him with tremendous force, propelling him into the water.
Despite immediate efforts to save him, Walkes was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition. Tragically, his injuries proved fatal, and he passed away the following day.
The inquest into this heartbreaking incident revealed that Anton Walkes suffered “facial trauma” from the collision, with blunt force trauma cited as the cause of his untimely death.
Assistant coroner Dr. Julian Morris provided more details, stating, “On January 18, he was a passenger on a jet-ski when a 46ft scarab boat collided with them – ejecting Mr. Walkes into the water. He was wearing a flotation device and was in the water for less than a minute.”
During the proceedings, it was emphasized that Anton was never fully submerged in the water, a detail that underscores the suddenness and severity of the collision.
Anton Walkes began his football career with Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur in July 2013. Although he only made one appearance for the senior team, coming on as a substitute in Spurs’ 5-0 victory against Gillingham in the League Cup in 2016, his talent and potential were evident.
Afterward, Walkes had stints with Portsmouth and Atlanta United before making his move to the Major League Soccer (MLS) club Charlotte in 2022.
The tragic news of Anton Walkes’ passing sent shockwaves through the football community. Zoran Krneta, the sporting director of Charlotte FC, expressed the team’s deep sorrow, saying, “We are heartbroken from the loss of Anton Walkes, a truly incredible father, loving person, and outstanding human being.”
Krneta continued, “Anton embodied what it means to be a part of Charlotte Football Club, and our entire community is grieving over this tragedy. The impact he made in the locker room and throughout Charlotte will never be forgotten. We are thinking of his lovely family during this time and will support them fully in every way imaginable.”
Tottenham Hotspur also paid their respects to their former player, whom it is believed had a daughter. The club released a statement, saying, “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former player, Anton Walkes. The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”
