Wanda Sykes is one of the more famous names in the Hollywood, and all of the LGBT population was jumping from joy when she was amongst the first black woman who not only came out as gay back in 2008, but also admitted that she was already in a same-sex marriage for a month. Early life and Education
Alex Niedbalski was born in France in 1974, where she was raised.
As of March 2020, there is no relevant information about her early years, including details about her birth date, childhood, education and parents. It isn’t known where she went to school, if she went to college, or even what was her career prior to 2006, when she met Sykes. Some sources claim that she has a Master’s degree in Business and Marketing.
Meeting Wanda Sykes
Niedbalski met Sykes for the first time in 2006 during a ferry ride around Fire Island. Sykes stated that Niedbalski was hanging out with a little child while carrying a computer bag, and this made Sykes realize that she needed some stability in her own life.
‘Something said to me – like, audibly – “Wow, that’s what you need, Wanda,”’ she noted. She also mentioned a funny anecdote – at the same time of said vacation, she was remodeling her kitchen, and all of her friends joked that she’d never pick a date if she keeps boring everyone with talks about the remodeling. A few days later, one of those friends introduced her to their friend who was working with granite countertops so the kitchen remodeling could be continued – and it turns out that the person at stake was the gorgeous woman who Sykes saw at a ferry ride, and she happened to be single! The two felt a spark and soon began dating.
Sykes’ states that one of her bigger life crises happened when she was 40, when she came out to her parents, who are very conservative. Both her mother and her father were shocked by her sexuality and refused to accept it at first – they even refused to go her wedding – but the family reconciled several years later.
Marriage
The couple wed in secret on 25th October 2008. The marriage was kept undisclosed until a month later, when Sykes publicly came out at a same-sex marriage parade regarding Proposition 8 in Las Vegas.
This quickly became the talk of the town, especially as prior to this relationship Sykes was married to Dave Hall, American record producer, and the marriage lasted for seven years, from 1991 to 1998. She later gave her complaints about the marriage, claiming that she was bored in that relationship and that she never really understood why she stayed in it for so long. Next year, on April 27, Alex gave birth to fraternal twins – a daughter and a son, respectively named Olivia Lou Sykes and Lucas Claude Sykes.
The kids are Caucasian, and Sykes is known to joke in her movies about the perception of black mothers in the world, especially if the kids are interracial. She also joked that she leaves the doctor visits to her wife, as no one is ‘going to blame the white, French lady, it’d be the black mama they’d blame!’ Their kids are bilingual, speaking both English and French fluently. The family often visits Niedbalski’s birth country, France. As of March 2020, the couple split their time between Media, Pennsylvania USA, a suburb of Philadelphia, as well as in Sykes’ summer house located in Cherry Grove, New York US.
Personal Life
Prior to her marriage, Niedbalski had kept her life rather calm and quiet, and she is trying to do so even after her relationship brought her into the spotlight. However, this still helped her to meet Barack Obama, America’s first black president and a pro-LGBT politician, as well as his wife and First Lady Michelle Obama. Still, Niedbalski manages to remain in the background and to avoid most media attention – apart from occasional red carpet events that she attends with her spouse. The couple is also a huge supporter of LGBT rights, and they are both especially keen on legalizing same-sex marriage all over the country, and the world.
They often donate to People for the Ethnic Treatment of Animals (PETA), and advocate against animal cruelty. Niedbalski isn’t active on any social media, unlike her wife who has a lot of support both on her Instagram and Twitter profiles. The duo has been spotted at the US Open on 31st August 2018, enjoying a tennis match.

Niedbalski has a career as an executive president at Polycor Company – a Canadian and American firm active since 1987 and specializing in providing natural stones solutions – and she earns around $80,000 annually.
She formerly worked as a Sponsorship and Marketing Manager in the Levantine Group for over four years, and for a year with the French Basketball Federation. She also has some experience working in the global company WTA.
