Charles Joseph “Joe” Clark, Template:Post-nominals (born June 5, 1939), is a former journalist and politician, as well as a Canadian statesman, businessman, writer, and university professor. From June 4, 1979, until March 3, 1980, he was Canada’s 16th Prime Minister. Despite his lack of experience, Clark climbed rapidly in federal politics, gaining a seat in the House of Commons in the 1972 election and the Progressive Conservative Party’s leadership in 1976.

He was elected in 1979, defeating Pierre Trudeau’s Liberal government and bringing an end to sixteen years of Liberal dominance. Clark became Prime Minister the day before his 40th birthday, making him the youngest Prime Minister in history. His time in office was short, as he only managed to form a minority administration that was eventually ousted by a vote of no confidence. Clark’s Progressive Conservative Party lost the 1980 election, and Clark was forced to resign as party leader in 1983.

In 1984, he rose to prominence as a senior cabinet member in Brian Mulroney’s government before resigning from politics in 1993 after failing to win re-election to the House of Commons. In 1998, he returned to politics to head the Progressive Conservatives until the party was disbanded, spending his last term in Parliament from 2000 to 2004. Clark is now a university professor and the head of his own consulting company, and is widely regarded as a brilliant scholar and politician.
