Since then, the beauty and elegance of the uniquely designed headgear have people talking. Helmets are of great importance because they not only act as protective gear for athletes during the game but also represent the team of the players donning them.
In 2019, when a mass shooting happened at a Walmart store in El Paso, Riddell Sports donated 8000 headgear with ‘ElPasoStrong’ written in them as a means to heal the bereaved community.
It is already the middle of June. We are just a couple of months away from the high school football season, which generally commences in the month of August or September.
On the 24th of August 2023, the Varsity Boys’ Football El Paso Tigers will go against Gadsden Panthers according to MaxPreps. Let’s take a look at helmets, stadium, football rankings, and the history of the El Paso HS.

Texas helmet project is an initiation of Matt Davenport, a former coach. Matt created thousands of Texas High School helmets on his website.
It became a go-to place for all helmet enthusiasts because he offered headgear of all classes ranging from 6A, 5A Divison I, and 5A Divison II to 1A/Six-Man Divison I.
If anybody needed any latest helmets of any high school football team, it was the site to go. The site’s popularity surged unprecedentedly making it hard for Davenport to continue it.
So, he closed it but in 2019, it got a second life at TexasFootball.com/helmets.
El Paso Tigers Football Stadium
El Paso Tigers football stadium is R. R. Jones Stadium. The home venue of Tigers was built the same year as El Paso HS in 1916.
It was named after the assistant principal Robert Randolph Jones who later got promoted to the position of principal in 1936.
The first college football bowl game called Sun Bowl was held at this stadium. For another two years in a row, this stadium hosted the Sun Bowls.
It is of historical importance because it is one of the first major concrete stadiums built in the U.S. with permanent outdoor lighting.
People often remember the R. R. Jones Stadium for hosting a Friday night football game in Texas in the year 1928.
Except for being historic, it has been honored as:
- Maxprep’s top 10 stadiums in the country
- Inductee of Texas Stadium Hall of Fame (2014) per El Paso Times
- Best Resemblance to Ancient Rome (2014)
- Second-best HS stadium in the USA (2019)
A total budget of $500,000 was spent on its construction with a 12000 seating capacity.

KTSM 9 NEWS addressed this stadium as the most beautiful high school football stadium in all of Texas.

El Paso High School History
El Paso High School football team won against their arch-rival Austin High School Panthers with a score of 7-3 in 2010 under head coach Robert Morales.
It was a notable win because, for 10 years, the Tigers had not had a taste of success. El Paso High is the oldest standing high school in the city of El Paso situated in Texas state.
It is also the first high school to be constructed in El Paso whose establishment was completed in 1916. Their history is remarkable.
Since El Paso school is located on a mountainside, near the Franklin Mountains like an elegant lady as it overlooks the city, it has been rightly nicknamed ‘The Lady on the Hill’.
The architectural firm Trost & Trost Architects & Engineers is credited for building the school on 9.5 acres of land in a classical revival style.
Not only for football but for their grand building embellished with hints of Greek architecture like symmetry, tall columns, and complete balance the school is recognized.
The average life span of a building is around 100 years. The school has been around for 107 years. It is no joke.
In May, it was revealed by KFoxtv that a budget of $15,880,000 was given to the Spartan Construction of Texas, Inc. for renovating the school structure.
Interestingly, there is a monochromatic photograph of the school taken in 1917 from an airplane with the National Archives and Records Administration.
The school believes in building connections and nurturing them. The highly active official Facebook group of Tiger Alumni is a testimony to it.
The class of 1973 will be celebrating their 50-Year Reunion in October 2023. To reminisce the good old days, with food, fun, and laughter, all classes have been invited.
It will be a 3-day event, that will be held on the 13, 14, and 15th of October at 3 different locations, Paso del Norte Hotel The Dome Bar, Grace Gardens, and Ardovino’s Desert Crossing.
Besides football, the school has produced other sports talents like Daniela Ocaranza, an exceptional tennis player. She recently got selected for the Class 5A state tennis tournament.
Also, the Tiger Boys Golf Team is showing its prowess on the golf course. They recently won their 8th consecutive District Championship. Similarly, El Paso is great in many other sports including soccer and swimming among many others.
While growing up, we often heard the haunted tales of our school. Being a century-old school, El Paso has its fair share of legends.
A YouTube channel named Fate Decided has uploaded a video referring to it as the most haunted school in America. Some alumni of the school agreed with the video while some claimed it to be completely fictional.
On the other hand, there are many other uploads about the El Paso high school ghost.
