His purchase of the property coincided with the promotion of snooker by the BBC and its broadcast on color television. This made the sport a major attraction for the public and made them invest more in the sport. In 1974 Hearn began promoting snooker events for amateur snooker players who turned professional. He then began managing a number of top snooker players under his company Matchroom Sport in the 1980s.
After the snooker boom of the 70s and 80s, Barry Hearn entered boxing in 1987. His first promotion was the fight between Frank Bruno and Joe Bugner, which took place at White Hart Lane in October of the same year. He has since ventured into boxing in other sports like darts, football, fishing and table tennis. In football, Barry Hearn was chairman of Football League club Leyton Orient from 1995 to 2014. In darts, he chairs one of the two governing bodies of darts, the Professional Darts Corporation. He was also president of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA).
