Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Death And Execution Date
On the 4 March 2022 hearing, the United States Supreme Court decided to uphold the death sentence of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
He is currently serving his sentence in a federal prison in Florence, Colorado.
The court had convicted him of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombing. He and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, planted pressure-cooker bombs near the finish line on 15 April 2013. Krystle Campbell, Martin Richard, and Lingzi Lu died while 280 or so got injured.
At the time of the incident, Dzhokhar was studying at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. After the bombing, the brothers shot and killed Sean Collier, an MIT Police Officer. Later that day, they had a shootout with the police which resulted in the death of Tamerlan.
However, Dzhokhar was able to survive and fled the scene. The police found him with mortal wounds on 19 April, hiding in a trailer in Watertown.
After that, on 22 April, he faced charges of using/conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property, both resulting in death. Later, he also disclosed New York City’s Times Square as their next target. Similarly, he also told the authorities about Anwar al-Awlaki’s lectures playing a part in the brothers’ radicalization.
Two years after that, on 8 April, he got convicted, and two months later, he received a death sentence.
On 31 July 2020, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit overturned his sentence and ordered a retrial with a new jury for the penalty phase.
However, on 4 March 2022, the Supreme Court ruled, 6-3, that the First Circuit improperly vacated Tsarnaev’s capital penalties and reversed the decision. As for the execution date, the details remain unknown.
