If you have attended Rhea County athletic events — especially in Spring City — over the last several years, you have surely heard his voice. On Sunday night, the entire nation was introduced to Rhea County High School’s Drake McCain Taylor who was featured on American Idol.

Hundreds of supporters — including family, friends, basketball teammates, RCHS administration and staff and local TV media from Chattanooga — met in the school auditorium for a viewing party Sunday night.

Attendees were treated to pizza, cake and drinks and a few live selections from the American Idol competitor and his fellow signing companion, Abigail Corvin.

Taylor, who goes by the stage name of Drake McCain, is an 18-year-old senior at RCHS and is a four-year player on the Golden Eagle basketball team.

He has 10 siblings and works at the Piggly-Wiggly grocery store in town to help care for his family. He’s always had a love for music and signing, and last year began his journey to American Idol, which culminated with a golden ticket on Sunday’s episode.

Earlier in his high school career, he auditioned for both America’s Got Talent and The Voice however he didn’t make it to the TV rounds. For a while, he stepped away from music but eventually returned to his roots and began hosting music shows and mini-concerts with Corvin.

“I thought well if I didn’t make it through those, why should I try again? I was going through a rough time in my life, but I started singing with Abigail again and realized this is really what I want to pursue as a career,” McCain said. “To get the chance to go out and showcase my talent was just incredible. I’m truly thankful for all the love and support. […] It’s something I will remember for the rest of my life.”

McCain said he sent in his information to American Idol and was contacted for a private audition with the executive producers of the show in Nashville. From there, he was invited to attend the filmed auditions in Louisville, Ky., where he performed in front of the panel of Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.

In his earliest singing days, McCain fell in love with music while signing at Rhea Central Church of God. His foundation in the church led to his song choice for his audition: “His Eye is on the Sparrow.”

“That was one of the first songs I started signing when I was growing up in the church. It just has a special meaning behind it and reminds me He’s watching over me. Gospel is where I started, so it was important for me to sing a song I was comfortable with,” McCain said.

After his audition, Perry joined in with him for an impromptu duet. Bryan was reminded of an iconic scene in the movie “Sister Act 2” where the choir broke out in “Oh Happy Day.” At that moment, McCain and Perry “took America to church” with their own rendition of the song. Richie was impressed with McCain’s overall performance and stage presence.

“You’re doing this without a band, without a keyboard and have the ability to harmonize with other folks. It’s just a matter of getting you into the game,“ he said.

“I think singing in the grocery store has been good for you because I believe you just bagged a trip to Hollywood,” Perry said.

“To go in there, get to sing with Katy and win a ticket to Hollywood is just a dream come true. I really think American Idol is made for me. I love to sing, and I have a story behind it. I’m not just a voice,” McCain said.

The Spring City native said he was truly blown away by the entire American Idol audition experience and that he honestly doesn’t remember much from the audition.

“Once you get in there, you really kind of blackout and even going back and watching it on tape, it’s surreal that it actually happened,” he said.

He added that the chance to harmonize with someone he admires — Katy Perry — was a moment he’ll never forget.

“I don’t know what Heaven is like, but I think that was pretty close to it. She was just angelic. It truly left me speechless,” he said.

While he admits his nerves were hard to contain, he’s no stranger to being center stage, dating back to his first days of signing the national anthem at Spring City Red Dogs football games.McCain said the biggest crowd he’s ever performed in front of would easily beat last season’s TSSAA 1A boy’s state basketball championship at Middle Tennessee State University where he sang the national anthem.

“That was definitely the biggest crowd I’ve ever sung in front of. It was a ton of people and truly a moment to remember. Deep in my heart, I think that was probably my best rendition also,” he said.

The Rhea County senior enjoys a wide range of music but said that some of his favorite artist and inspirations include Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, and the late Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston — to name a few.

“I love listening to music. Even though some artists sing the same genre, it’s just different. They have a different tone and something unique they bring to the table,” he said.

McCain said some people tell him that he sounds like Shawn Mendes though he isn’t sure he agrees.

“I really don’t worry about that too much. If I get compared to somebody, that’s fine but I really just want to be me,” he said.
