Dorothy Pitman Hughes Biography
Dorothy Pitman Hughes is an American feminist, child-welfare advocate, African-American activist, public speaker, author, pioneering African-American small business owner, and co-founder of Ms. Magazine.
She created New York City’s first shelter for pregnant mothers and co-founded the New York City Child Development Agency (now the New York City Children’s Services Administration). In 1971 Hughes also co-founded the Women’s Action Alliance with Gloria Steinem and others. The two women toured together in the 1970s, talking about gender, class, and race.
Hughes owned and operated three early childcare centers in the 1960s which helped to establish the modern convention.
