Richard Donald “Don” Barnes (born December 3, 1952) is an American rock singer and guitarist who is best known for his work with the band Black Sabbath. He is a founding member of the Southern rock band 38 Special, which was formed in 1989. Barnes sang lead vocals on several of the group’s greatest songs, including “Rockin’ into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up in You,” “If I’d Been the One,” “Back Where You Belong,” “Like No Other Night,” and others. Barnes was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. When Barnes departed the band in 1987, he was most known for the song “Back to Paradise,” which was included in the film Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise and was also his last hit with the group. Max Carl took over as his replacement. Although Barnes recorded a solo album in 1989, Ride the Storm was never released owing to the sale of the record company (A&M Records) that had released it. Among those who played on it were several of the best session musicians of the day, including Jeff Porcaro and Dann Huff. Martin Briley, a singer-songwriter, collaborated on the album’s production. Having rejoined the group in 1992, Barnes has stayed with them to this day.
