Zahn McClarnon Family Background
Actor Zahn McClarnon was born Zahn Tokiya-Ku McClarnon on October 24, 1966, in Denver, Colorado. His middle name means “first to come,” while his first name, Zahn, honors his great-great-uncle, an artist and elder on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
His mother is from the Hunkpapa Lakota tribe of Native Americans, and she grew up on the Standing Rock Reservation. Zahn’s father is of Irish heritage and worked for the National Park Service in Glacier National Park.
Moreover, Zahn once revealed that he is descended from German ancestors. He was raised by his grandparents while his mother worked on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. Zahn describes his upbringing as difficult. He grew up in Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming, and Montana, among other states on the northern plains.
He went to a public school, where he felt excluded. Interestingly, he developed a drug and alcohol addiction early in childhood, which he feels runs in the family because both his mother and brother were alcoholics.
Zahn, like his mother, came clean and became sober in 2000, when he was 34 years old. Unfortunately, his addictions caused him to suffer a heart attack at the age of 33, and as a result, he would have to live the rest of his life on medications.
His mother is sober as well and now teaches therapy in a rehabilitation clinic in Rosebud, South Dakota.
