Berry was chosen by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth overall slot of the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Since 2004’s Sean Taylor, he was selected higher than any defensive back and higher than any Tennessee Volunteer since Jamal Lewis.
Does Barry still play for the Chiefs?
No! To avoid having a portion of his pay completely guaranteed, Berry was released by the Chiefs on March 13, 2019.
He had been battling with a sore heel while recovering from the ruptured Achilles; however, it was later determined that he had a Haglund deformity, which is a bone spur that pushes into the Achilles and causes excruciating pain.
Before making his season debut in Week 15, he had missed the first 13 games. In addition to the Chiefs’ 31-37 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship, he participated in two regular-season games and one postseason game.
Since Sean Taylor, who Berry adored before Taylor’s passing, was considered the highest-scouted safety, Berry was predicted to go no lower than the Cleveland Brown’s pick at No. 7.
He was predicted by analysts and scouts to go in the top ten or first round of the NFL draft. According to NFL expert Mike Mayock, DraftScout.com, Bleacher Report, and Sports Illustrated, he was the top safety prospect in the draft.
