Doctors in Kenya – Overview
Doctors in Kenya are specialized in different areas for example Psychiatrist, immunologist, Anaesthesiologist, cardiologist, neurosurgeon, dermatologist, gastroenterologist, Forensic pathologist, oncologist, a rheumatologist and many more.
All medical and dental students must earn a degree. Medical degrees require six years of academic education, plus a one – year internship; while dental degrees include five years of educational training, plus a one – year internship. The University of Nairobi trains 90 percent of Kenyan-trained medical doctors, While Moi University trains the remaining 10 percent.
Nurses and Midwives in Kenya
In Kenya, there are 70 institutions accredited by the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) to train nurses, of which 68 are actively training three classes of nurses: enrolled, registered, and Bachelor’s prepared. Enrolled nurses earn a certificate in two years of study, registered nurses a diploma over three years, and Bachelor’s prepared nurses a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) in four years, with an additional year of internship.
The NCK has approved six institutions to teach enrolled nursing, 53 institutions for registered nursing, and nine to offer BScNs across Kenya. There are 33 public nurse training institutions, of which 23 are Medical Training Colleges (MTCs). The MTCs have a tutoring capacity of 257 lecturers for 22 MTCs but have reported the need to more than double this capacity, requesting an additional 317 lecturers and tutors.
Nairobi has 15 training institutions (22 per cent), followed by Rift Valley with 14 (21 per cent), Central and Eastern with 10 each (15 per cent each), Nyanza with eight (12 per cent), Western with six (eight per cent), Coast with four (six per cent), and North Eastern With one (one per cent).
Clinical Officers in Kenya
In Kenya, there are 24 training institutions registered with the Kenya Clinical Officers Council to train clinical officers. MTCs, which are government-sponsored, represent 17 of the 24 institutions, accounting for 71 percent of clinical officer training institutions in Kenya. Of the remaining institutions, two are government-sponsored universities (Egerton University and Kenyatta University), two are private (Lake Institute of Tropical Medicine and Mt Kenya University), and three are faith-based (Kenya Methodist University, St Mary’s School of Clinical Medicine in Mumias, and Presbyterian University of East Africa).
Currently, all clinical officers are trained at the diploma level, which requires three years of school, plus one year of internship. Following their internship, clinical officers can specialize in a variety of areas, including anesthesia, ophthalmology, pediatrics, orthopedics, reproductive health, mental health, and ear/nose/throat. In 2010, Mt Kenya University began offering the first Bachelor of Clinical Medicine program for clinical officers, which includes four years of academics, followed by a one —year internship.
The distribution of training institutions and newly trained clinical officers differ provincially. From 2006-2009, Central had six (25 percent) of Kenya’s clinical officer training institutions, trained 22 percent of new officers. Nyanza, with five institutions, trained more than 25 percent of new clinical officers, followed by Rift Valley, with four institutions and 16 percent of new officers. Coast, with only two institutions, trained 13 percent of new officers. North Eastern is the only region that does not train clinical officers.
Doctors in Kenya – Laboratory Technicians and Technologists in Kenya
There are 25 institutions approved by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologist Board (KMLTTB) to train laboratory technicians and technologists. Laboratory technicians earn a certificate after two years of training, and technologists receive a diploma in three years, and a degree after four years of training. Six (24 percent) training institutions offer both certificate and diploma programs, 14 (56 percent) offer only diplomas, and five (20 percent) institutions offer degrees.
MTCs constitute 44 percent of laboratory training schools, 55 percent of government-sponsored laboratory training institutions, and 55 percent of diploma programs for laboratory technologists. The 11 MTCs report a total of 73 laboratory tutors, with a tutor to student ratios that range from 1:16 at the Nairobi campus to 1:34 at the Meru campus, with an average of 1:16 across all MTCs. Twenty (80 percent) of the laboratory training schools are government-sponsored.
There are three private institutions Kenya University, Kenya Institute of Applied Sciences, and Kings Medical College) and two faith-based ones (University of East Africa—Baraton and Kenya Methodist University). New student intake for laboratory training schools occurs biannually, in February and September.
The distribution of training schools is uneven provincially. Rift Valley has six of the 25 laboratory training schools (24 per cent), followed by Eastern with five institutions (2O per cent), Nairobi and Central with four each (16 per cent), Nyanza with three (12 per cent), Coast with two (eight per cent), and Western With one (four per cent). Additionally, MTCs have laboratory training institutions in all provinces, except North Eastern.
