Dj Black Coffee was born Nkosinathi Maphumulo on March 11, 1976 in Durban, South Africa. He comes from a broken home as his parents divorced when he was just 12 leaving him to live alone with his mother in the poor community of Mthatha in Eastern Cape Town. This experience left him somewhat reserved but highly intellectual and developed a keen interest in music, also fueled by his uncle’s reggae collection.
Tragedy struck when he lost use of his left arm, which was left paralyzed after he and dozens of people were run over by a taxi driver during a rally in support of Robben Island’s recently freed Nelson Mandela in 1990. This incident was believed to be politically motivated and occurred two years after him and his mother moved to Mthatha.
After the accident, he threw himself into the musical as a means of escaping the injuries, and he did so with even more focus and dexterity than when he had control of both his arms. After taking it a step further, he returned to Durban to study music theory with a concentration in jazz at Natal Tech. He later dropped out before completing his course.
In a recent Facebook post, he shared a photo of himself wearing an arm brace “for the first time in years” to encourage fans.
“Don’t let anything bring you down” and “Fight for the best version of you”.
The words the fans uttered after this vulnerability showed how much people admired him for this bold move.
Foundation, endowment
His personal experiences with disabilities led him to establish the DJ Black Coffee Foundation, which helps fund sound production training for disadvantaged students.
The DJ Black Coffee Foundation is a partner of Bridges for Music. They give preference to physically challenged applicants and funding covers full tuition for a student studying SAE’s prestigious one-year college certificate in sound production at our bespoke new campus in Cape Town’s prestigious Woodstock Exchange.
As long as the candidates have the 12th grade certificate, are physically challenged and are South African, they will be considered. However, candidates must cover all living expenses and travel expenses if they are from outside Cape Town.
