The television movie tells the story of the Henley family -Jim, his wife, their son Matt, and daughter Kate, along with Matt’s friend Ethan.
While driving through New Mexico, the group discovers the whereabouts of a ghost town called Weaver and decides to take a detour to it to take some pictures.
They stop at a diner in the neighboring town of Two Wells and ask about the ghost town, but the patrons, all seeming dazed, confirm not to have heard of such a town.
However, a gas station attendant warns them to stay on the pavement. But the family makes their way to Weaver, where they discover a wall with human-sized dried skin and a mysterious symbol.
Soon after, strange and mysterious things start happening.
Disappearance Movie 2002 Ending Explained
Disappearance movie 2002 ending implies that the mysterious cycle will begin all over again. The ending saw the Henleys in the town of Two Wells in the same dazed state as others.
After experiencing terrifying incidents in the ghost town, Jim visits Sheriff Richards in the town of Two Wells. He tells him about the town of Weaver, where the residents vanished without a trace.
He also tells him about Ethan’s disappearance and the unseen being attacking them.
When the Sheriff was away, an old inmate pulled Jim aside and said the town does exist and the unseen beings are possibly the offspring of the townspeople, who refused to evacuate before the bomb was dropped.
He further said the forces could be the spirits of Indians (Native Americans) interred in a burial under the town or even Area 51.
In the later part of the film, when Henleys pick up Ethan from the Sheriff’s and drive off, their car hits an unseen creature, causing the vehicle to flip over.
Six months later, Jim is seen working as a gas station attendant and Patty as a waitress in the diner. All of them were in the same dazed state as the rest of the members of the town of Two Wells.
Toward the end, several bikers are shown turning up at the town’s diner, most likely to begin the cycle all over again.
The family seemed as though something else was inhabiting their bodies.
It was as if Matt, who took pictures of everything, transformed into the crow as we saw the desert from the bird’s point-of-view at the end, and it captured its view just as the boy would have done.
Moreover, it is suggested that the old gas station attendant seen in the beginning most likely inhabited the body of the little girl, Kate.
When the girl sees a motorcycle, she says “Nice bike,” just like the old man said “Nice car” when he looked at the family’s car in the beginning.
This parallel suggests a possible connection or transformation between the girl and the old man.
The end of the movie was open-ended, intended to leave the viewer’s imagination run wild. The inexplicable disappearance of the townspeople and the 1948 bomb test all came to an abrupt end.
After all the suspense and spookiness viewers could only ask: Were they zombies? Possessed? Bodysnatched? What was the unseen force in the town?
The ending purposely leaves viewers up in the air, giving them the impression that whatever was going on in the town will keep happening as long as their’s people traveling like the bikers at the end.
Many viewers have complained about the movie ending calling it a mysterious thriller with no answers.
“It’s as if the writers couldn’t think of any more so they sliced on an ending to make it fit in two hours,” an IMDb user wrote. One even said, “The writers disappeared before writing an ending.”
