Difference Between Shame and Embarrassment

Shame and embarrassment are feelings that we sense as human beings when faced with distressing problems. Although, these two feelings vary from one another. The difference between shame and embarrassment arises from their various connections with morality. Shame can be described as a passionate condition that emerges when an individual has done something bad. In this situation, shame is connected to morality. For instance, we often feel ashamed if we have humiliated someone we adore. This is as well linked to guilt. On the other hand, embarrassment does not occur due to immorality. It is when a person feels uncomfortable when facing a challenging social occurrence. This is the difference between the two terms. This article intends to introduce an evident knowledge of the two terms while pointing out their differences.

What is Shame?

Shame can be described as distress from the understanding that an individual has done something unfair or foolish. This is a very intense feeling that is connected to remorse. The unique feature is that when experiencing shame, the person immerses in a procedure described as introspection. He queries his morality. This has to do with suspicions about whether his act was moral. The person discovers his action has been wrong and immoral through this procedure. For instance, imagine a worker who engages in an illicit movement to better his life opportunities within a firm. An example can also be a parent who has not finalized his part as a parent. In both situations, the person feels distressed when he finds out he has engaged in an unfair action. In the first instance, it is the illicit actions of the worker. In the second instance, it is the absence of attention and care toward the child by the parents or guardians. Although, embarrassment does not imply the same thing as shame. It does not have to do with introspection or the queries of one’s morality.

What is an Embarrassment?

Embarrassment can be described as feeling awkward, uncomfortable, or out of place in a certain event. We all feel embarrassed at some point or other in our everyday existence. Imagine a condition where you slide and fall in a public place. Or you feel stage fright when you are giving a speech. In these two events, we feel embarrassed. Contrary to shame, embarrassment is a significantly milder condition. Embarrassment often comes from our tensions or anxieties about others which may have to do with what they feel and what they would say. These suspicions heighten our embarrassment; it causes us to become self-conscious. Contrary to shame, embarrassment is not a situation of self – introspection. It is a typical response to the condition where the person feels awkward. It is as well momentary and varies between two individuals. A very meek person can be embarrassed more quickly than an individual with a very outgoing and friendly personality.
