Difference between docsis 3.0 and 3.1

DOCSIS 3.1 features significantly higher speeds than DOCSIS 3.0. DOCSIS 3.1 also uses data spectrums more efficiently, increasing the amount of data that can be sent over your network.

DOCSIS protocols

It just means that your modem can provide broadband internet access. DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 are just version numbers. The bottom line is that if your ISP offers internet speeds of more than 1 gigabit (1,000 Mbps, or megabits per second), a DOCSIS 3.1 router is a better investment.

This standard is called “data over cable service interface specification,” or DOCSIS, and currently they all use DOCSIS version 3.0. (Those using DOCSIS 2.0 or earlier are obsolete.)

The latest DOCSIS standard, DOCSIS 3.1, is capable of 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) download speeds and 1 Gbps upload speeds. However, the most widespread DOCSIS standard is DOCSIS 3.0, which is capable of 32 download channels at one time and over 1 Gbps download speeds.

Our 500Mbps and 1 Gig services do require a DOCSIS 3.1 in order to bond to the OFDM Channel and receive the higher speeds.

Other DOCSIS 3.1 benefits are:

Better security than previous versions. Reduced packet latency to reduce lag for better video streaming and online gaming. Backward compatibility with DOCSIS 3.0.

Do I need DOCSIS 3.1 for gigabit internet? You don’t technically need DOCSIS 3.1 to achieve 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) download speeds. According to some experts, you can achieve those speeds with a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. But a modem compatible with DOCSIS 3.1 will ensure that you reach 1 Gbps speeds and beyond.

DOCSIS 3.1 was made for gigabit speed internet. It supports the following, a whopping: 10,000 Mbps download, 1,000 Mbps upload. Unless you plan on having multi-gigabit connections very soon, you don’t have any reason to buy a DOCSIS 3.1 modem.

Motorola MB8600 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem

Motorola’s MB8600 is capable of reaching fast speeds, up to 6 Gbps, which is ideal if you’re using a gigabit-based internet plan. All that power generates heat, but this well-designed unit is loaded with vent holes on either side.

Do you need a router if you have a modem? The technical answer is no, but the practical answer is yes. Because a modem can only connect to one device at a time, you’ll need a router if you want to be able to access the internet from multiple devices.

Originally Answered: Can you just buy a router and have the internet? NO YOU CAN‘T. Router just provides you the wireless signals from your ISP or Ethernet cable which allows you to connect to internet wirelessly. To access internet you must have an Ethernet cable plugged in at the WAN port on your router.

Technically speaking, a modem is fundamentally more important than a router because you wouldn’t be able to connect to the internet without one.

Yes you can connect to internet without a modem if your internet service provider gives you connectivity through Ethernet or WiFi. There are some local providers who just drop an ethernet cable which you can connect to your system or they let you connect to their wireless access points.

A WiFi connection transmits data via wireless signals, while an Ethernet connection transmits data over cable. An Ethernet connection is generally faster than a WiFi connection and provides greater reliability and security.

Yes, you can create your own ISP. Plenty of people have undertaken this task, especially in rural or remote areas where high-speed internet is hard to come by, such as areas without cable or phone lines.

The ISP is the link or conduit between your computer and all the other “servers” on the Internet.
