Difference between blue and green lightsaber

In the original 1982 teaser trailer for Return of the Jedi, the color of the lightsaber was blue. The decision to change the color of the lightsaber from blue to green was made to make Luke’s blade contrast with the blue sky of Tatooine and make it more visible during the skirmish at Carkoon.

Blue lightsabers are by far one of the most prolific lightsaber colors in the Jedi Order. In the Star Wars films and animated television series, the most famous Force users to wield blue lightsabers are Anakin Skywalker, his son Luke Skywalker, his Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ezra Bridger of Star Wars: Rebels.

In the Star Wars universe, lightsaber colors are determined by the force of the Jedi using a lightsaber. More specifically, as noted on the official Star Wars site, lightsabers come from Kyber crystals, typically found in the frozen caves in the world of Ilum, which acquire color once attuned to a specific Jedi.

The kyber crystals are what give lightsabers their different colors – these are rare, force-attuned crystals that grow in nature and can be found on different planets. Kyber crystals are uncolored, but once they are found by a Jedi, they take different colors.

The rarest lightsaber color in Star Wars is the black one. That’s because there’s only one ever shown. The first Mandalorian child in the Jedi order used one known as the Darksaber. Besides, there is a wide range of colors that we could say are the rarest lightsaber colors in this famous franchise.

While Vader was certainly powerful with the Force, Kylo Ren is arguably even stronger, being able to freeze people in their tracks without even needing to focus on them. Though Kylo Ren may not be as proficient with a lightsaber as Vader, with enough training, he could overpower his grandfather.

This use of a Force power generally reserved for the Sith is foreshadowing for the movies biggest twist: Rey herself is a Palpatine, born of Sith blood and heir to the throne of her grandfather’s Final Order.
