Thurgood Marshall was an American civil rights lawyer and jurist who served on the United States Supreme Court as an associate justice from 1967 to 1991. Marshall was the first African-American justice on the Supreme Court. Before his judicial service, he was a civil rights attorney who led the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Marshall was a leader in the fight to end racial segregation in schools.
Marshall won 29 of the 32 civil rights cases he argued before the Supreme Court, culminating in the Court’s landmark 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which rejected the separate but equal doctrine and declared public school segregation unconstitutional.
In 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court. As the Court became more conservative, he frequently dissented as a staunch liberal. Clarence Thomas took over the Supreme Court after Marshall retired in 1991. Marshall passed away in 1993.
