Outside of cricket, Botham has a wide range of sporting interests. He was a gifted football player at school who had to choose between cricket and football as a career.
He chose cricket, but he did play professional football for a few seasons, making eleven appearances for Scunthorpe United in the Football League before becoming the club’s president in 2017.
He enjoys golfing and other outdoor activities such as angling and shooting.
Ian Botham Back Surgery and Illness
Sir Ian Botham’s legendary fundraising walks almost ended when he underwent spine and hip surgery.
This created a problem for his Beefy’s Charity Foundation and the seven charities it supported.
“Dad is crucial to all of the fundraising we do – people expect to see him at events like the annual walks,” his daughter Sarah, who runs the foundation on behalf of the trustees, said. “But it became clear following his operations that things had to change.”
In 1985, the England cricket icon began walking for charity to raise money for Leukemia Research.
Ironically, it was these walks that took their toll on Sir Ian, necessitating surgery.
Following the spine surgery, two hip replacements were required, and it became evident that the foundation would have to find an alternative to the fundraising walks. They came up with the notion of organizing a “virtual” walk long before the coronavirus arrived, forcing the charity to think of new ways to raise donations.
Sarah, the daughter of Sir Ian, claims that her father has transformed since his surgeries. “He’s fantastic — he reminds me of the Bionic Man.”
Ian Botham Health Problems
Sir Ian Botham, the cricket legend, has publicly revealed in 2016 that he underwent impotence treatment and also urged other men not to suffer in silence.
Sir Ian, then 60, underwent shockwave therapy, which zapped his privates to prevent erectile dysfunction in the future.
“Men don’t want to face this head-on, but they must,” he remarked. I don’t have a problem, but I don’t want one.”
“It’s more about prevention than cure. I didn’t require the therapy, but I didn’t want to be concerned about it ten years down the road.”

During his playing career, Sir Ian, nicknamed Beefy, was known for his wild love life.
Before entering the Test match commentary box, Sir Ian received acoustic shockwave sessions in clinics nationwide.
“The machine is placed on you, and its purpose is to regenerate the vessels in that area of your body.”
“You don’t seem to be feeling anything. It makes a noise, and when you’re finished,” said Ian.
