Arie Luyendyk Jr began racing in 1992 with karting and advanced to the Sports Car Club of America club Formula Ford championship at the age of 16. He raced in various junior formula series in the United States, winning the Skip Barber Formula Dodge series and finishing in the top five of the US Formula Ford 2000 Championship.
Luyendyk placed third in the Formula Continental class at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs in 2001, and he also won the SCCA Southern Pacific divisional title with four wins in the same class that year.
He dedicated himself to the Indy Pro Series (now known as Firestone Indy Lights) for three consecutive seasons beginning in 2002.

Luyendyk attempted to make his IndyCar Series debut in 2005 by qualifying for the Indianapolis 500. His qualifying speed of 215.039 mph (346.072 km/h) was, however, about two miles (3.2 kilometers) slower than the next slowest qualifier at the time.
He was eventually bumped from the field when A.J. Foyt recruited Felipe Giaffone, who qualified with a four-lap average speed of 217.645 mph (350.266 km/h).
