As the world mourns the recent loss of Tom Smothers, renowned as one half of the iconic Smothers Brothers, we take a moment to reflect on the familial ties that defined the life of his younger brother, Richard Remick Smothers, better known as Dick Smothers. However, amidst the well-known Smothers Brothers, there’s another sibling who has stayed relatively out of the limelight—Sherry Smothers.
A Shared Legacy: The Smothers Brothers Duo
Born on November 20, 1938, in New York City, Dick Smothers embarked on a remarkable journey in the world of entertainment, standing shoulder to shoulder with his elder brother, Tom. The duo created waves as the Smothers Brothers, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of musical comedy.
The Early Years and Personal Loss
Dick Smothers’ childhood was marked by tragedy, losing his father, Thomas B. Smothers, an Army officer, who died as a prisoner of war in April 1945. Ruth Smothers, their mother, played a pivotal role in shaping their lives during those formative years.
After relocating to Southern California, Dick pursued his education, attending Verdugo Hills High School in Tujunga and later graduating from Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach. His academic journey continued at San José State University, where he actively participated as a distance runner for the track team.
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Legacy
The Smothers Brothers became a household name through their appearances on various television shows, including their own sitcom, The Smothers Brothers Show (1965–1966), and the variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1967). Their infectious humor and musical talents resonated with audiences across the nation.
Beyond the Limelight: Sherry Smothers
While Dick and Tom gained fame for their comedic prowess, there’s another Smothers sibling who has maintained a more private profile—Sherry Smothers. As we pay tribute to the Smothers Brothers’ legacy, Sherry remains a symbol of family strength and support.
A Tragic Turn of Events and Family Resilience
The Smothers family faced challenging times, notably with Dick’s filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2010. Despite the setbacks, the brothers announced their retirement from touring in May of the same year.
Dick Smothers’ involvement in amateur automobile racing and his roles in films like Casino showcased his versatility. His dedication to family is evident through his six children: Dick Jr., Andrew, Steven, Sarah, Susan, and Remick.
Marriage and a Fateful Announcement
In September 2022, Dick Smothers took a step into a new chapter, marrying Marie Navarroli Kropp. However, joy turned to sorrow as the announcement of the 2023 tour was followed by the cancellation, coupled with Tom Smothers’ devastating diagnosis of stage 2 lung cancer in July 2023. Tom’s passing on December 26, 2023, marked the end of an era.
As we remember Dick Smothers and the enduring legacy of the Smothers Brothers, Sherry Smothers stands as a testament to the strength that family provides, even in the face of adversity. While the spotlight may not shine as brightly on Sherry, her presence in the Smothers family narrative is undoubtedly significant, emphasizing the bonds that tie the Smothers siblings together.
