Alicia Cardenas is a true Denver Native—a proud Indigenous artist born and raised in the city who has spent nearly her entire life working in the Denver body modification industry.
She began working and apprenticing at Bound By Design when she was 16 years old, and she started professionally piercing there a year later. Twisted Soul, Denver’s first custom tattoo and professional body piercing studio, opened in 1997.
She began her tattooing career in 2008, adding to her already extensive knowledge of body modification. Then, in 2009, after twelve glorious years at Twisted Sol’s Cap Hill location, she and longtime shop manager Kevin Strawbridge relocated to Broadway to open Sol Tribe.
Alicia is also a muralist and cultural anthropologist, studying and collecting a wide range of cultural artifacts.
We lost a great one last night. Our good friend Alicia Cardenas was murdered in Denver. She was a wise, caring, and talented person. Most know her for her tattoo/piercing work and murals throughout the city. We are pretty crushed by the news. pic.twitter.com/CeftesxSc6
