In September 2011 he signed with BC Krasnye Krylya of Russia for the duration of the 2011 NBA lockout. He was released by the club the following month after appearing in six games. He subsequently returned to the Spurs in December and in 2011. The Spurs went on to become Western Conference champions, only to eventually fall to the Miami Heat in the 2013 NBA Finals.
DeJuan Blair Austin Spurs NBA
DeJuan Blair has been drafted by the Spurs the Austin Spurs. He went in the 4th round as the 107th pick. Blair was originally drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in 2009 in the 2nd round, 38th overall. He played with the Silver & Black for four seasons before signing a one-year deal with the I-35 rival Dallas Mavericks.
In true rival fashion, Blair spent Game 5 of the 2014 playoffs suspended for kicking Tiago Splitter in the head during Game 4. The Spurs won the series and went on to claim the NBA Championship. After Dallas, Blair spent two more NBA seasons with the Washington Wizards, where he saw his playing limited. The following year he played in China before returning to the states as part of G-League, first with the Texas Legends then the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
Yesterday, the Austin Spurs drafted Blair which could put him in his first Spurs jersey since the 2013 Finals. Blair also said he had the Spurs’ game for next season circled, and that if he had played in the seven-game loss to the Heat in the Finals, the Spurs would have won the title. Yes, because clearly Blair was going to be the difference there.
Nothing explosive there, but it’s interesting to see Blair criticize the team that saved his career by drafting him, and to blast a team that’s widely regarded as one of the best, especially at developing talent. Basically, if the Spurs couldn’t make an NBA player out of Blair, can anyone? Dallas certainly thinks they can. Dallas coach Rick Carlisle wants Blair to play as an “enforcer” type.
The 29-year-old has already had a taste of the continent. He traveled to Argentina last year to play professionally for a couple of months. As fate would have it, he suited up for San Lorenzo de Almagro, one of the other three teams competing at this weekend’s event. The experience was an eye-opener, not just in terms of living in a different country but by being exposed to Argentinian basketball. “I remember there’s great chemistry over there,” Blair said to Eurohoops.net. “Great players, great coaches. It’s going to be a lot of fun seeing my old teammates and everything. It’s a great team, great organization, I liked it, I wish them the best, and hopefully, we see them in the Final.”
For that to take place, Austin will need to beat Flamengo on Friday and San Lorenzo must defeat AEK. Otherwise, if Austin and San Lorenzo were to fall, the two sides would meet in Sunday’s Third-Place Game. If Blair makes the sort of eye-opening plays that have made him a fan favorite, Austin will have every chance of reaching the Final.

DeJuan Blair Contract
DeJuan Blair will be taking his talents north next season after signing a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. ESPN’s Marc Stein originally reported that the two sides were in serious talks, but Blair later tweeted confirmation on what’s widely expected to be a one-year deal. The Dallas Mavericks are only eligible to sign free agents to the veteran’s minimum and it sounds like that’ll be what Blair makes next season. Hoopsworld Alex Kennedy says initially heard some rumblings that the San Antonio Spurs might send Blair to Dallas via a sign-and-trade, but it’s more likely that the Mavs locked him up with a one-year deal.
The acquisition of Blair could be a very good one for Dallas after missing out on marquee big men like Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum this offseason, but there’s no guarantee he makes a splash for the Mavs this season. Blair will likely be competing for minutes with returners Brandan Wright and Bernard James along with fellow free agent signing Samuel Dalembert as they all try to complement Dirk Nowitzki.
The 6’7, 265-pound bruising big man looked to be a steal early in his career with the Spurs, but fell out of favor this past season. The Pittsburgh product averaged just 5.4 points and 14 minutes per game despite getting the call for 16 spot starts early in the season.
The Mavericks had expressed interest in bringing Blair back earlier in the free-agent process. However, their massive offer to Chandler Parsons, trade for Tyson Chandler and other minor signings left them with little wiggle room. Dallas was only able and willing to offer a minimum-salaried deal, something neither Blair nor his representation thought was fair based on his per-minute production.
The Wizards were aggressive in their pursuit of Blair, and recent reports indicated a sign-and-trade was in the works. Stein broke the sign-and-trade talks, which were viewed as a good-faith move on Dallas’ part. By agreeing with the Mavericks and then being traded, Blair lands a better contract while Dallas gets a minor trade exception. It’s also worth noting that Parsons and Blair are represented by the same agent, Dan Fegan. These quid pro quos are nothing new in the NBA, and it helps that the Wizards have pushed hard for Blair in recent days.
