He featured Micheal McDonald in the song “Yah Mo B There” for which he won a Grammy and was able to get another one for ” 100 Ways”.
James had been struggling with a brain tumor till his last breath when he died in his Los Angeles home. His friend and partner Debbie Allen broke the tragic news of his death on Twitter saying”I have lost my dearest friend and creative partner James Ingram to the Celestial Choir. He will always be cherished, loved and remembered for his genius, his love of family and his humanity. I am blessed to have been so close. We will forever speak his name”.

In a 2009 interview, Debra recalled how she answered the phone when talking to Quincy Jones. Moreover, she called her just to offer her husband his huge reprieve. Robbinson said,
“Quincy called the house one day. And said ‘this is quincy jones. May i speak to james ingram?’ and q asked him, ‘is this the guy who did the demo for ‘just once’? I want you to come in and sing.’ well, james’ response was, ‘you mean play keyboard. I’m not a singer.’”
Later on, Ingram stated that his wife had been inflexible that it was, indeed, Quincy Jones on the opposite end of the telephone.
