American author David Zindell is well-recognized for his science fiction and fantasy writings. On November 28, 1952, he was born. When Zindell’s short story “The Dreamer’s Slumber” was published in Fantasy Book in 1984, he officially started his writing career.
The Writers of the Future competition was won by his novelette Shanidar, which shared a world with his first book Neverness. A Requiem for Homo Sapiens, a trilogy, came after Zindell’s first book, Neverness.
The concepts of evolution and consciousness are explored in this series, which is a continuation of the Neverness universe. The plot centers on a prince named Valashu Elahad who is searching for the Lightstone, a potent artifact, in order to stop the evil Morjin, Lord of Lies. Morjin wants to bring chaos and insanity to the planet.
The Ea Cycle, a fantasy trilogy by Zindell, also touches on issues of consciousness and development. Throughout the series, Ilahd, Valashu Elahad’s son, travels in pursuit of his destiny while coming into contact with fantastical animals and enigmatic characters.
In addition to his works of fiction, Zindell has also written nonfiction, including the 2015 book Splendor and the 2017 book The Idiot Gods. The latter is a distinct narrative told from the perspective of knowledgeable killer whales.
Zindell has received appreciation from critics for his writing; John Clute called him a “romantic, ambitious, and accomplished” author. In an effort to portray the interconnection of all things, the connection between mysticism and evolution, and the potential of life, Zindell himself has summarized his writing style.
Through his fiction, he aims to dispel false dichotomies and close the gap between consumerism and spirituality.
