David Glass Walmart Inc.

Glass is a former executive of the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. He joined the company in 1976 and was the Executive Vice President of Finance. During his tenure as the Vice President of Finance, Glass administered the overall financial and accounting responsibilities of Wal-Mart Stores. He was later appointed to the position of vice chairman and chief financial officer. David served in that role until 1984 when he was appointed to the position of president and Walmart’s chief operating officer.

He managed the development of Walmart’s proprietary trend-forecasting software which is known as the Retail Link program, in 1985, alongside Rob Walton, the eldest son of the founder of Walmart, Inc. Sam Walton. In 1988, Rob stepped down as Walmart’s CEO for Glass to be named as his replacement. David served in that position until 2000 when he stepped down and H. Lee Scott took over the role.

David Glass The Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Royals is an American professional baseball team. Mr. Glass acquired the baseball team in 2000. Before, he had been named the interim CEO and chairman on September 23, 1993, following the death of the owner, Ewing Kauffman. The board slashed the payroll from $41 million to $19 million under the leadership of Glass.

David opposed any settlement with the players’ union without a salary cap during the Major League Baseball strike of 1994–1995, as he supported the use of strike-breaking “replacement” players. This was against a court ruling that the use of replacement players violated federal labor law.

Glass purchased the team from the Kauffman estate for $96 million on 18th April 2000, making him the sole owner. Glass’ bid was lower than that of $120 million by Miles Prentice but the board approved it as Prentice did not have enough net worth to withstand substantial losses. The decision was also supported by the fact that none of the area’s wealthy families were willing to even consider making a bid for the Royals or any other existing or prospective professional team in Kansas City. Glass’ bid would keep the team in town.

Glass Owning/Leadership The Kansas City Royals

As the owner, Glass brought in a cost-cutting management style similar to what he used at Walmart. His management tenure was previously criticized due to his strong and firm policies. The Royals garnered large profits, while they were barely competitive for most of the early part of the new millennium. Between 1990 and early 2000s, the baseball team was named among the worst teams in Major League Baseball.

Additionally, on June 9, 2006, Glass revoked the press credentials of two reporters who had earlier asked pointed questions to the Royals management. His move to avoid criticism infuriated many within the press and led to a backlash of articles that extended far beyond the Kansas City sports community.

Under the leadership of Glass, The Royals have also had several winning seasons: 2003, 2013, 2014 and 2015. They reached the 2014 Major League Baseball Playoffs for the first time in 29 years and advanced to the World Series for the first time since 1985.
