A native of Widnes, Cheshire, England, Dawson attended Fairfield High School and Warrington Collegiate Institute before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 2002.
Following graduating from RADA in 2005, Dawson starred as an understudy to Kevin Spacey as the eponymous hero of Shakespeare’s Richard II for Trevor Nunn.
He then made his television debut in 2005 as a guest actor in one episode of Doc Martin.
Dawson became famous for playing writer Tony Warren in 2010’s BBC Four drama The Road to Coronation Street for which he received critical praise.
